Do you think Betty was deliberately putting up an act of being bewitched or was it something running through her mind that influenced her actions? In either scenario, what would have caused her to act like that? - Johnny
In my opinion, Betty is acting of being bewitched because she is afraid of Abigail. Abigail has the power to scare her friends and make them go along with whatever she wants. - Andrew Lu
I agree to what Andrew is saying, but i also think that Betty was influence. In my opinion, Betty was influence by Abigail since she went and the girls went crazy in the forest in which the girls were not acting like themselves, so Betty began to act crazy because she wont get in trouble and people would give he pity. As a result, Abigail cause Betty to act like this!
Can you describe the relationship between John Proctor and Abigail? Were they really in love or is it a one night thing, since in act 1 it stated that they made love and fought.
"A one night thing" He felt the need to rebel as an attempt make his wife, who has been soo cold to him jealous. And he wanted to reach out for at least some love nomatter what kind of love it was.
Well, compared to the movie and the actual book, Abigail worked for them as a servant and during a certain time Elizabeth became sick. In the movie, Elizabeth said that while she was sick she thought Proctor was seeing Abigail. I honestly doubt that John was in love with Abigail. He probably had an affair with her just because he was desperate. And Abigail, being a young and "innocent" girl, when she had that affair, her eyes must have been opened and thought that she is in love with Proctor.
They were just fwb, but then she was like "you know you want me again", and he was like "nahhh not anymore, you ratchet." Then he sees shes fallen for him and he doesnt want non of that, hes tryna get outa there before stuff gets ugly.
*I'm just curious to hear what other people's interpretations of this quote. What do you think Proctor meant when he said, "Is it the Devil's fault that a man cannot say you good morning without you clap him for defamation" (31)?
In my opinion, along with the context of other lines, Proctor is saying that people cannot say something to Giles Corey because Corey will misinterpret it. Corey will think of it as an insult to his reputation and image. The "Devil's Fault" I am assuming is an excuse (not literally the Devil) for Corey because Proctor references about Corey being old and having bad hearing. - Johnny

I think at the point Marry said it some of the girls agreed with her because they didn't want this problem get bigger by not telling the truth. But as Abigail said she'd kill anyone who'd tell the truth, the girls started to think that Abigail threat was more horrible than the punishment that they might get by telling the truth. Besides, if they agreed with Abigail, people would protect them, so they decided to follow what Abigail said. -Mila-
On page 31 Giles Corey said "I've changed my opinion of this man, John. Mr. Parris, I beg your pardon. I never thought you had so much iron in you." What was his first opinion? Why did he changed his mind? What was "iron" really mean? -Mila-
I agree w/Katie. I think she made herself believe that it really was "true love" because she was still a young person. Most young people always make themselves believe it's true love, when it really isn't.
I agree with all of you, but I also want to add that after Abigail attempts to use a curse to kill Elizabeth, she also thought that with Elizabeth dead, she would take the place of John Proctor's wife which answers your question Graham, if Abi's love for John is real which I would answer yes with this statement.

Abi a "bop" NO ONE TELL JENNI WHAT THAT MEANS! she's obsessed with him it blinds her at the end of the movie she kinda realized that so she called him a witch(wizard). john on the other hand truely regrets makin it nasty with her. -Darrien:)
Best friend! i think John Proctor just wanted Abigail because in the movie *i don't know about the book yet but In the movie one of the last scenes states that Elizabeth and John Proctor were not talking for a minute and John wasn't getting any from his wife so he was wanting Abigail but I honestly think it was just a hit and quit it situation for John also knowing that Abby is like what seventeen ? If she didn't confess, they would kill her. If she confessed, they would let her live in jail or not a good life. It was her choice and she chose to confess.

I don't think there were an examples of witchcraft. The way I see it, the whole witchcraft seems fake; and if the other people in the town see it as true witchcraft, then they are in denial

I think that if the things that had happened in Act 1 weren't witchcraft, then everything that happened, someone could explain it; like how Betty &Ruth were sick, and the doctor couldn't explain &when the girls were seen dancing in the woods while they were cooking something no one knew of.

So, Tituba decided to confess because she knew that it will save her from punishment, which undoubtedly worked because now all the attention and false accusations she was getting all have been shifted to other girls. I think if she hadn't confessed, that would have been the end of the story, and probably none of the witch trials would have taken place.
Let's say the girls did open their mouth and spread the word about their actions. Wouldn't you think that knowing that Abigail found out about them,she would be considered an accomplice with the girls and even if that wasn't that case, the girls could have told the town that Abigail could've been involved one way or another which would result in possible hanging?

In Act One the girls put full blame on Tituba. Knowing she is a slave from Barbados she was the first target and people believed it was Tituba doing the witchcraft. If Tituba confessed that she was just doing a ritual of her culture that was non related to witchcraft and the court decided to give serious consequences because they would think it was witchcraft when they don't know about the practices and traditions in barbados and tituba says it was not any sort of witchcraft would this be an example of excessive stereotyping? What are some examples of excessive stereotyping that happen today?

I think they basically just want to clean up their society from witchcraft. They only want to kill the devil, not the people. The death penalty that they gave to people who didn't admit was meant to kill the devil in those people because the judges thought that those people had devil inside them. So once Tituba admitted doing witchcraft, they practically wanted to safe her soul from the devil -Mila
