The Crucible, Act III Questions and Discussion

What are the possible reasons why the judges can easily trust Abigail's accusations but hardly believe what Corey says about Putnam?
ReplyDeleteI think the judges easily trust Abigail's accusations because they think she is the one that is "hurt". I feel that the judges fall for the sob story and immediately are one-sided. In terms of Corey accusing Putnam for taking the accused's land, I think its also because Corey won't say who his source is. That would have made it harder for the judges to really take sides
DeleteI agree w/Dominique, they all just felt "bad" for Abigail &then Corey didn't have legit proof of his accusations of Putnam, so they can't fully believed him.
DeleteWhat would you do if you were in Mary Warren's position? When Abigail and the other girls "think" they saw you and you keep telling them that you're not doing anything. How would you react?
ReplyDeletepersonally, i would just sit down and be quiet. Obviously just saying things will only hurt me (being Marry Warren). I would have thought it through and not flip out, i would just sit down and be quiet and Abigail cant really do much against me.
DeleteSame, she should of acted calm, quiet and professional. But being young and in a position like that i can see why she would flip out.
DeleteWhen Marry Warren is telling the court that Abigail is lying why don't any of the other girls go and defend Marry? Are all of the other girls just too afraid to confess that this was all fake?
ReplyDeleteMary was forced on John's end to argue against the girls and the confidence she had during the questioning did not make it seem appealing enough to switch sides. Abigail has already influenced the girls to be on her side. Even if any of the girls wanted to swap sides, the confidence Mary showed most likely deterred them from doing so.
Deletei agree with johnny, because john forced Mary into confessing at the court, and the other girls are afraid to get in trouble for lying about seeing the devil in the first place and abigail would have done something terrible to them too. - Andrew
DeleteYes i think the girls were too afraid to confess that this was all fake because if they say the true then they have to face all the consequences.

ReplyDeleteIf I was Reverend Hale, I would not quit and try to help Proctor and the people in jail who are accused witchcraft somehow. Or I would wait for the best opportunity to help like later on in the book when Abigail leave or something.
DeleteWhy is Reverend Hale denied from contributing any word into court/the witch trials? He has a reputation of being a witchcraft expert, why is he not being recognized for it?

DeleteHow are the girls able to faint so realistic that turns their body to ice cold after the shock? Also what some possibilities that they do to be able to be so coordinate and able to act on the same time?
ReplyDeleteBefore hand Abi probably planned everything out, told the girls to repeat everything Mary says. And to faint realistically they just practice i guess, its acting, its suppose to be realistic. For the cold body....maybe they have slow blood flow?...idk

I agree with Katie, and I also want to add that she could've gotten in serious trouble with Abigail. If she had stayed with Proctor, Abigail would've done away with her.

i think she turned against him because she was really scared if they were going to hang her and if Abi was going to turn against her even more then what she already did in the church with the other girls.

ReplyDeleteDo you think act III is a turning point or the main part in the play? Like, everything that has happened like in Act I && II, and then suddenly all the intense drama in act III?!

Yes, act 3 is the climax of the play, the main characters John and Abi have been engrossed and now everything is going crazy.
DeleteDoes act 3 take a stand on the question of whether people have an innate sense of justice? (For example, do young people and the uneducated fare any better with questions of justice than educated people do?)

ReplyDeleteWell, it depends. If I knew John already admitted about the affair earlier in the court, then YES, I would have admitted it so that our stories would match, and we both could have proven that Abi was lying the whole time. But otherwise, I wouldn't have admitted to knowing about the affair because there's no need to share my 'marriage issues' with everyone else. (Lol)
Deleteyes i would have because if the court knew nothing of the affair then they wouldnt have asked about it. Yeah i think its okay that she lied because she didnt know any better and she waas trying to save her husbands good name.

ReplyDeleteMary Warren did not know that the bird fiasco was going to happen. I think at that moment, she felt like there was no hope. I think Abigail didn't plan it out, it was in the heat of the moment. -Justine

ReplyDeleteWhy Mary admitted to pretending is because she maybe noticed that this hole accusing people was getting out of contral and abigail was accusing people that were honest and didnt deserve it

Reverend Hale quit because he knew the act of the girls and the court following these accusations and suspicions was ridiculous he couldn't take the ignorance once this whole thing seemed ridiculous to him

ReplyDeleteThe judges believed that they were of higher power than the wich hunter.
ReplyDeleteHe is of lower class and could possibly be comprimised.
In the roman days, they had gladiaters for entertainment, so this hanging could be a possible means for entertainment.
