How is Scout influenced by the absence of her mother? Calpurnia may be a mother-like figure, but is it the same as Scout actually having her mother present in her life?
I think that because scout does not have a mom that made her into a tom boy or more independent and affects her daily. I think that calpurnia has helped her a lot but will never take the place as a mother to her
Though Scout's mom is dead, other women in the book do have a "motherly" impact on her, like Ms. Maudie, Aunt Alexandra, Calpurnia, etc. In the book, Scout says that she really doesn't remember her mother as much as Jem does. So the closest thing to a mother would have to be Calpunia. Plus, Calpurnia did help teach Scout to read and write, as a mother would have. I wouldn't say it's the same, having a mother's love is WAY different from, I guess, a maid's love.
Calpurnia is definitely someone Scout looks up to the fact that her mother is not present. Calpurnia does discipline the children and when Alexandra was talking with Atticus about Calpurnia I believe he as well agreed that the kids do look up to her in that sense of a motherly figure because she takes care of them pretty well, and the kids like her around Marilyn
I think that Scout being a tomboy is somewhat a result of her not having a maternal figure in get life, but I think Calpurnia certainly has done a great job trying to fill in that role.
I agree with Paula. I think Mrs. Dubose is actually a nice lady, she's just old and consumed too much drugs that she's not really conscious about what she's doing when she's being mean to Jem and Scout. When Jem read to her and kinda help her struggling with her morphine addiction, she gave him the flower to thank him.
How will the outcome of the trial shadow the fench family name?will it be a possotive or a negative? And will it effect his god like how that judge lost his bog in the case where the guys were blamed for rapping those white girls(forgot the name)
i feel like whatever happens it will be bad, as it is already pretty bad. if they win the trial, people will be mad that Atticus helped a black man. If they lose, everyone will remember how Atticus defended a black man and failed.
Why do you think Atticus wasn't so surprised when he saw that Dill was here? Don't you think that as a parent, you would've been caught off guard to see a kid barge in your home and stay for a week?
Dill is a known friend of Jem and Scout. It is beneficial for Scout to have a friend around considering how Jem is acting grown up. Dill's situation is another reason thus Atticus is willing to help him.
I think Aunt Alexandra has her good and bad qualities but she is often looked upon as a "bad" person in the story because we have to keep in mind that this is Scout telling the story. A young, wild-spirited kid like Scout wont grow fond of someone as uptight and solemn as aunt Alexandra. Even though she is very opinionated and rude at times, she clearly cares for her family and their reputation. Atticus values Aunt Alexandra's conscience enough to trust her to give scout some "feminine influence."
I agree with Cheriza in the way that Atticus does believe that Aunt Alexandra is trying to do good protecting the families reputation and when he's gone that will in fact be in good hands, but at the same time the kids don't admire her maturity and her uptight qualities because they are kids. But Alexandra is their Aunt, she's family so Atticus I believe would trust his kids in her hands. Marilyn

i think he is trying to explain to them that everyone has a good and bad side to them and also the times when people just dont realize that they are acting in a negative way.
I agree with Julie. (Also, I like this quote because it just shows how righteous/moral Atticus is.) Basically, I think he is trying to tell his children not to judge someone (Mr. Cunningham) just because of one immoral thing they've done. It doesn't automatically mean that they're bad people, it just means that they have.. well, their "blind spots."
As Atticus said, that time Mr. Cunningham feels what it's like to be in his position. He sees that Atticus has kids to take care of, just like him. I think she reaminds him about his son and makes him realize that hurting Atticus won't bring any good. I'm not really sure about the entilments, it might be realated with him owing Atticus.
Scout's talk with Cunningham strikes him due to the fact that he is being lectured by a young girl. It is out of the ordinary and surprising that a young girl would know a lot about the situation and be able to point out what is wrong with his/the mob's judgement.
I think they went because thye wanted to see how everything was gonna go down and to be there for moral support becauise they knew he has been mistreated and doesn't deserve it.
Even though Mayella had a very compelling testimony, with the way things are in Maycomb, do you think her testimony will be truly be considered in the final ruling or will her testimony be ignored and will sentence Tom Robinson to death?
I think it all really depends on the jury's decision and what will be stated during the verdict. Also, Atticus uses strong points as for her to point out to a crippled man when then Mayella didn't actually point Tom out right away but shows that she could be wrong which could make Tom have a verdict of innocence.
I think Judge Taylor is a strict and weird guy because he eats cigars and pretends that he is not paying attention when he is. Also, like what Andrew said, he bias is Atticus because he jokes around with him and treats Atticus understanding and with respect.
I personally don't think he is bias because he seems like a really fair man that he would just make it be whatever it comes down to whether or not he necessarily agrees with it or not.
Why doesn't Mayella just tell the truth when she is on the witness stand. Her dad would get convicted and she wouldn't have to worry about him anymore. She would have no fear of him cause of the nearby police.
So when they were in the court room and the judge kept questioning Robinson and when he asked about why he helped Mayella cutting up that furniture piece, do you think he sincerely did it just beacuse he felt bad for her? Or maybe for other reasons, but not leading up to what she calimed he did to her
I think Robinson was doing it to be nice. He seems like a respectable person and although Mayella is a poor white girl shes still white and back then no matter what, white was better than black. So i feel like out of respect he did her the favor.
